About the trip
This escorted cycling holiday with Explore Worldwide traces a route across Albania that stretches from Lake Ohrid in the northeast to the Ionian coast in the south. Starting in Tirana, the capital known for its eclectic architecture and open-air market, riders head three hours east to Pogradec and cycle along Lake Ohrid’s blue waters before working up to the high mountain passes around Germenj. Wooden cabins and farm dinners invite a pause in the forested Gramos Mountains.
The tour descends through river valleys to Permet, continuing to the Ottoman town of Gjirokastër, with its broad fortress overlooking stone streets. Along the coast, the Blue Eye spring and the ancient ruins of Butrint offer archaeological reminders amidst the wetlands. The route follows the Albanian Riviera’s narrow roads past steep headlands and seaside villages before finishing in Berat, a World Heritage town known for its hillside whitewashed houses and its own citadel.
Cycling distances vary daily, with some challenging ascents balanced by chances to stroll or relax by the beach. The support vehicle is usually on hand, making this a chance to see an often overlooked country from a distinctly active perspective.
