About the trip
This eight-night small-group walking holiday starts on the Black Sea coast in Batumi before heading inland to Svaneti, a high mountain region known for its ancient villages and distinctive stone watchtowers. After a long drive north, the pace of life slows as the team follows trails through wildflower meadows and conifer forests, with several hikes offering views of waterfalls beneath the spired summit of Mount Ushba.
From the townlet of Mestia, you join walks up to alpine lakes and along glacier valleys, travelling by four-wheel drive where roads worsen. A particular highlight is Ushguli, a cluster of hamlets where oxen still plough the fields beneath brooding medieval towers. The trail takes you close to Georgia’s highest peaks, including Mount Shkhara, often visible through thin mountain haze.
Run by Explore Worldwide, this is an escorted tour where the effort of trekking is balanced by time spent in isolated villages, staying with the proud Svantian people. The route returns to Batumi via Zugdidi, leaving a moment to stretch legs along the shoreline or inspect the city’s unusual mix of nineteenth-century and modern architecture.
