The journey continues to Karakorum, the former Mongol Empire capital, visiting the Erdene Zuu Monastery and local market before marking the Naadam Festival’s rural celebrations with wrestling, archery and horseback racing. Crossing rivers and gorges, the tour reaches the Orkhon Valley with its waterfalls and green steppe, where traditional skills like ger-building are demonstrated by a local family.
A long drive leads into the Gobi Desert, stopping at Ongiin Gol’s ruined monasteries, the Flaming Cliffs where dinosaur eggs were found, the vast Singing Sands of Khongor Dunes and the rocky Yolyn Am valley. The final days include the provincial capital Dalanzadgad and the red granite Baga Gazriin Chuluu outcrop, before returning to Ulaanbaatar via the Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue. Travel is by 4WD with stays in authentic gers, some very basic, and a shared transport rotation among small groups.
