This eight-day escorted tour from Explore Worldwide begins in Marrakech, the Red City, where dusty rooftops and the frenetic Jemaa el-Fna square offer a lively introduction. After a morning visit to Ouzoud Falls and a lakeside stop at Bin el Ouidane, you head north along the Middle Atlas, passing through Meknes — once the sultan Moulay Ismail’s capital, with its imposing mausoleum and granary — before arriving in Fes.
Journeys
In Fes, the oldest imperial city, the medina’s labyrinth reveals craftsmen at work and the Royal Palace’s glimpse of Moroccan power. Nearby lies the Roman site of Volubilis, with mosaics still vivid after centuries of sun. The pace quickens as you cross Berber lands to Merzouga, where a Berber desert camp waits on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Shared facilities and basic showers may not suit everyone, but the sunset’s light on the sand more than compensates.
After dawn on the dunes and possibly a camel ride, the route traces the southern Atlas foothills through Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley’s kasbahs to Ouarzazate. Late in the day you visit Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou before returning over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass to finish with a guided tour of Marrakech’s medina.
