Next comes Vang Vieng, once noisy and now quieter, where limestone cliffs loom behind rice paddies and the Nam Song River offers a restful evening backdrop. The train then snakes through tunnels to Luang Prabang, a laid-back town of French villas and gilded Buddhist temples nestled between two rivers. Here, a temple climb at sunset ensures a view over the orderly town and the surrounding hills.

Early starts bring the saffron-robed monks collecting alms before a visit to Kuang Si's limestone falls, where turquoise pools hang in the forest. The day finishes with a largely flat bicycle ride past pottery villages and ancient temples. The tour concludes after breakfast in Luang Prabang with time to leave at your leisure.
