About the trip
This small-group tour by Explore Worldwide travels through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia over 18 nights, combining urban life, mountain scenery and historic sites. It begins in Baku, where the medieval Old City meets modern skyscrapers, and includes a visit to Yanar Dag’s natural gas flame that gives Azerbaijan its nickname, 'land of fire'. From there, the route follows ancient trade routes to Sheki and then crosses into Georgia’s Kakheti wine region, stopping for homemade dishes at a local farm.
The tour takes in Tbilisi’s eclectic architecture, from Persian mosques to Soviet structures, includes a hike to a mountain-top church in Kazbegi, and visits cave monasteries at Vardzia. Crossing into Armenia, the itinerary visits pine-clad Dilijan, the shores of Lake Sevan, and monasteries tucked in mountain gorges. The final days are in Yerevan, with visits to a genocide memorial, craft markets and a duduk maker whose instrument sounds eerily like the human voice. While the long drives often come with striking landscapes, the pace leaves room for quiet moments and local encounters.
