Highlights

The high-speed train between Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand
Kyrgyz yurt camp and traditional horse games near Issyk Kul
This small-group holiday begins in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, with its marble architecture and echoes of Soviet and Niyazov eras. From there, the journey continues by overnight train across dusty plains to Kunya Urgench and then into Uzbekistan’s historic cities of Nukus, Khiva and Bukhara, each with distinctive architecture, bazaars and ancient fortresses.
Journeys
Next are Samarkand’s grand madrassahs and mausoleums, before entering Tajikistan to see mountain lakes and archaeological sites at the foot of the Fann Mountains. A short flight takes the group to Almaty, Kazakhstan’s former capital, and onward by road through the steppe, with stops at alpine Issyk Lake and Charyn Canyon, before crossing into Kyrgyzstan. The final days include traditional yurt stays, local horsemanship displays and visits to Bishkek, where Soviet past and nomadic culture meet.
The pace varies—there are long drives and border crossings on foot, and a few evenings to relax at hotel or yurt camps. Train journeys are basic but genuine, and group sizes small enough for a feeling of shared adventure amid spacious landscapes rarely troubled by tourists.
