Highlights
Nine-day trek to Annapurna Base Camp
Stays in family-run teahouses across the Sanctuary
Views of Machhapuchhre 'Fishtail' and Annapurna South
Dawn walk to viewpoint over Annapurna I south face
Leisure days and a boat trip on Phewa Tal in Pokhara
This two-week tour begins in Kathmandu, where a walking tour takes in the bustling bazaar and the historic Durbar Square, setting a vivid contrast to the quiet mountains ahead. After a long drive to Pokhara, the trek starts at Kiwl village, heading steadily upward through rhododendron forests and remote settlements such as Ghandruk and Chhomrong.
Journeys
From here, the route enters the natural amphitheatre of the Annapurna Sanctuary, with several days spent gaining altitude past waterfalls, caves and bamboo forests. Notable landmarks include views of Machhapuchhre’s distinctive ‘fishtail’ profile and spending a night at Machhapuchhre Base Camp itself. The itinerary includes a dawn climb to a viewpoint offering close-up sights of Annapurna I’s imposing south face.
The return trek follows a descending path back through forests and villages, ending with a couple of days by Phewa Tal in Pokhara before the long drive back to Kathmandu. The trekking pace allows time to appreciate local life and the mountain environment without racing, and an optional visit to nearby hot springs provides a soothing finish to the walking.
