The following days wind through the Piatra Craiului Mountains, crossing old empire borders and passing flowered meadows and the odd chamois. One hike follows the bright limestone ridge of ‘The Royal Rock’ itself, with a short section needing a firm grip on a chain – not for those uneasy with heights. Bran Castle makes an optional stop, its Dracula reputation outmatched by the story of Queen Marie. Several nights are spent in simple mountain huts, while some days end in a local guesthouse where hearty meals and homemade spirits await.

After several days in the hills, the trip returns to Bucharest for a city tour taking in its older quarters and less comfortable reminders of its recent past. The final morning is at leisure, and luggage storage is available for those with late flights.
