About the trip
This nine-night escorted trip with G Adventures begins in Chongqing, a city of steep hills and rivers that invites lively evening walks through districts like Hongyadong with its maze of shops and restaurants clinging to cliffs above the river.
From there you move to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, where the towering sandstone pillars inspired the floating mountains in Avatar. There is time both for guided walks and to find quieter corners among these unusual formations. Later the tour winds down in Yangshuo, known for its karst hills and rural scenes – here a bicycle ride takes in the surrounding countryside and town, offering a contrast between limestone towers, rice paddies and streets lined with cafés.
The tour includes short guided walks in several towns, a chance to sample local meals with the group, and one lunch is arranged, though most meals give freedom to try your own choices. Traveling mostly by train, bus and bicycle, it’s a chance to meet others and see parts of China away from the usual tourist throng.
