This small-group tour with Explore Worldwide threads its way through northeast India’s Assam and Nagaland states, starting in Guwahati on the mighty Brahmaputra River. The tour moves on to Kaziranga National Park for two game drives in search of the elusive Indian one-horned rhino, paired with a demonstration of tribal dance. Continuing east, it visits Kohima’s WWII cemetery before joining the annual Hornbill Festival, a gathering of Naga tribes in colourful dress next to their traditional homes.
Further north, the itinerary includes the island of Majuli, with its raised stilt houses and Hindu monasteries where mask-making and migratory birdlife provide interest. The final days take in Mon village near the Myanmar border, historic Sivasagar, and tea plantations near Dibrugarh, finishing quietly in Guwahati. Road conditions mean some long drives, but this is part of seeing a less-travelled India.
