Spirit of India at Christmas

The route continues to Ranthambore for morning and afternoon safaris in what is considered India’s premier tiger reserve. After Ranthambore, the journey moves to Agra to see the Taj Mahal from both the usual viewpoint and the lesser-visited Mehtab Bagh gardens. Agra Fort adds another layer of Mughal history before the tour takes in the more tranquil city of Lucknow, where a perfumery offers an unusual insight.

The final days are in Varanasi on the River Ganges. Early risers can watch bathing Ghats at dawn and there’s a visit to Sarnath, significant in Buddhism. The tour finishes with a flight back to Delhi and a farewell dinner. The pace is busy, with plenty of time spent on the road between locations, but it touches key sights and some unexpected details along the way.
