About the trip
This escorted two-week tour with Explore Worldwide follows historic caravan routes through Rajasthan, beginning in Delhi, where wide boulevards and the crowded bazaars of Old Delhi stand side by side. You'll travel by train to Ajmer, then stay in Bijay Nagar at a family-run former palace, with an evening of home-cooked Rajasthani food.
The route takes in some of Rajasthan’s most significant sites: Chittorgarh Fort’s vast compound with multiple palaces and temples; Udaipur, built around natural lakes and home to a City Palace mixing Rajput and Mughal styles; the intricately carved pillars of Ranakpur’s Jain temple; and the fortress of Mehrangarh towering over Jodhpur’s blue-painted houses. Further on, the ‘rat temple’ at Karni Mata and Bikaner’s Junagarh Fort add unusual touches.
The tour finishes with a visit to Agra, where the Taj Mahal waits for a sunset glow, followed by red sandstone Agra Fort. Along the way, there are encounters with village life, markets, and even a jeep safari in a wildlife sanctuary once used by local royalty. A well-paced introduction to Rajasthan’s landmarks with some less visited places thrown in for good measure.
