Inside Vietnam

A thoughtfully paced, small-group tour with Explore Worldwide tracing Vietnam from Hanoi’s colonial streets to the waterways of the Mekong Delta, blending cultural insights with local life and natural landscapes.

Highlights

What makes this one worth it

Walking tour of Hanoi’s Old Quarter and colonial landmarks
Caves and forests of Cat Ba Island in the Bay of Tonkin
Boat trip through Lan Ha Bay’s limestone karsts
Imperial Citadel and royal cuisine in Hue
Narrow canals and villages of the Mekong Delta

About the trip

Starting in Hanoi, the tour takes in the city’s French colonial buildings, lively Old Quarter streets named after crafts, and the chance to see a traditional water puppet show. After a short drive, Cat Ba Island offers forest trails and caves before a boat trip through Lan Ha Bay’s limestone islands, quieter than nearby Halong Bay.

Travelling overnight by soft-sleeper train, the journey continues to Hue, a city noted for the Perfume River, ancient temples, and royal cuisine such as bun bo Hue. From here, the route winds along the Ocean Cloud Pass, pauses at a museum of Cham art, and arrives at Hoi An where merchants once mingled with Europeans and Japanese. Hoi An’s tailored clothing, ancient bridge, and riverfront cafes leave time for independent wandering or a cooking class.

The final stage flies south to the Mekong Delta’s narrow canals and villages, followed by time in Ho Chi Minh City with its French architecture, wartime museums, and the tunnels of Cu Chi that offer a sobering glimpse of Vietnam’s history. The Explore Worldwide small-group format encourages a mix of guided discovery and free time for personal exploration.
