About the trip
This eight-night G Adventures small-group tour takes an active route through Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido. After arriving in Abashiri, the journey begins with gentle cycling and a visit to the Museum of the Northern People and Abashiri Prison Museum, both offering a less usual insight into regional history.
Trekking continues through the Shiretoko Five Lakes and the primeval forest, a rare expanse of old growth on the island’s east coast. Evening baths in steaming volcanic onsens help weary legs recover before the group heads inland to the volcanic peaks of Daisetsuzan National Park, including Asahidake, where a ropeway cuts the hardest climb. Cast in relief against the volcanic landscape, the local Ainu culture is shared in the village of Ainu Kotan.
The final days wind down with time in Sapporo for sampling northern’s Japan’s famous ramen and Japan’s original Sapporo beer. Days start with early hikes and end with a communal pint or two, a reminder that even in the wildest parts of Japan, good company and hot baths go a long way.
