About the trip

This extensive overland tour with G Adventures crosses Uganda, Tanzania, Namibia, South Africa, Malawi, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Zambia over 54 nights. It begins in Nairobi with a welcome meeting before heading into Uganda's Bwindi Forest for mountain gorilla treks, a rare chance rarely available to the casual traveller. From there, it sweeps south through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, where guiding is by smaller 4x4s for close-up game. The Okavango Delta's mokoro canoe and wild bush camping contrast with the simple hostels of Swakopmund and the Indian Ocean tides at Zanzibar.

The trip uses a custom overland vehicle called the Lando, designed for rugged roads and wildlife viewing through large windows. Much of the journey is camping in national parks and wilderness settings, with exceptions for bungalows on Zanzibar and dorm-style hostels. Participants take turns with meal prep and dishwashing, part of the group's rhythm. The itinerary is flexible; Africa's unsteady roads and weather sometimes change plans — part of travel here. It's a tour for someone comfortable with varying standards and lengthy road days but wanting a panorama of lands and cultures through the savannah and the rainforest alike.
