You then fly north to Hokkaido for several days in Shiretoko National Park, a World Heritage site known for forests stretching back to the last Ice Age and hikes around the Shiretoko Five Lakes and Furepe Waterfall. There’s also a chance to meet the Indigenous Ainu culture here and take a gondola ride on Asahidake for views above the tree line.

The final phase of the trip includes a stay in a traditional ryokan near Akan-ko, complete with onsen, and stops in Sapporo for its beer museum and markets. A ramen dinner in Asahikawa adds a welcome culinary note. All transport between places is included, but pack light — the flight to Hokkaido limits luggage to 20 kg.
