Tour · 9 nights · with G Adventures
A small-group trip from G Adventures through China’s varied landscapes and cities, from Shanghai’s futuristic cityscape to panda conservation in Chengdu and the karst peaks of Zhangjiajie National Park.
Highlights
Giant Panda Conservation and Research Centre in Chengdu
Bamboo raft trip on the Li River in Yangshuo
Bailong Elevator ride in Zhangjiajie National Park
Qixianfeng Tea Plantation visit
Symphony of Lights at Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong
This escorted tour with G Adventures charts a course across China’s striking contrasts, beginning in Shanghai where the skyline hints at the country’s rapid modernisation. After a taste of the city and its Bund waterfront, travel inland to Zhangjiajie National Park. The park’s sandstone pillars are so tall and narrow, they inspired the floating mountains in a well-known science fiction film. A ride on the Bailong Elevator, the highest outdoor lift in the world, offers an unusual vantage point.
Journeys
From there, the trip moves to Chengdu, home to the giant panda research centre. Visitors can go behind the scenes and learn about ongoing conservation work, punctuated by an evening hot pot dinner in the city. Then it’s on to Yangshuo, where a bamboo raft ride along the Li River winds past limestone karsts and quiet riverside villages. The route ends in Hong Kong, where the nightly Symphony of Lights sets the skyline ablaze over Victoria Harbour.
Throughout, the group travels by private vehicle, plane, cable car and bullet train. The tour mixes active moments with time to take in local life, guided by a National Geographic Expedition Leader to ease the logistics and background information. It is a demanding itinerary, but one that gives a clear view of contemporary China balanced with extraordinary natural landscapes.
