About the trip
This small-group tour by G Adventures follows sections of the 403km Trans Bhutan Trail, once the kingdom’s main route, closed to travellers for six decades. The route leads from Pelela to Chendebi, onto Tsangkha, then through Trongsa and Gyetsa to Bumthang, taking in rural villages that have changed little over time.
Along the way, there are visits to Dzongs – fortress-like monasteries – including Trongsa and Jakar Dzong, as well as museum stops at the National Heritage Museum and Ta Dzong. The hike to Taktsang Monastery, better known as Tiger’s Nest, is among the highlights: a steep climb rewarded with views over Paro valley.
Accommodation shifts from comfortable local homestays to camping under canvas with the group carrying light packs. Bhutan’s roads are a series of switchbacks, so prepare for winding journeys between walking sections. Hiking for extended periods, sometimes at altitude, is a requirement. The tour’s pace leaves space to take in Bhutan’s rural and spiritual rhythms without the usual tourist bustle.
