Journeys: Discover Montenegro and Bosnia

This eight-night tour by G Adventures takes you across Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and briefly Croatia, stitching together an itinerary of nature, history and local tastes. Starting in Dubrovnik, you have a morning welcome before heading towards the Adriatic coast where a boat cruise takes you to Our Lady of the Rocks, an islet with a centuries-old church.

The journey moves inland through Bosnia’s capital, Sarajevo, where you join a food tour and a narrated Siege of Sarajevo excursion that offers a glimpse into more recent history. Nearby Trebinje offers organic markets and craft experiences like cheese making and honey tasting. Along the way, botanical gardens and old necropolises add textures of green and stone to the trip. Transport uses private vehicles and boat, and stays are in family-run hotels—simple and central but often without lifts, so packing light is wise.

The group is capped at 16 travellers, meaning plenty of space for quiet moments amidst the region's stirring landscapes and, occasionally, stairs. A local guide leads orientation walks, while a National Geographic Expedition Leader oversees the overall experience. It’s a holiday less about ticking boxes and more about gentle attention to the layers beneath the Western Balkans’ surface.
